Website ranks city twelfth safest in U.S.

Your chances of being the victim of a crime in Glen Cove are less than in most other cities in the country, according to a recent report.

The website NeighborhoodScout released its list of the Top 100 Safest Cities in the U.S. for cities with populations of more than 25,000 people. Glen Cove ranked 12, one spot higher than Greenwich, Conn. and one behind Sammamish, Wash.

The Stony Brook SBDC will be hosting a course on QuickBooks Pro this Spring.  Get your business finances in order with Intuit QuickBooks Pro accounting software.



A certified QuickBooks Pro Advisor will teach you basic uses and features of QuickBooks including: setting up, working with QuickBooks lists and bank accounts, entering sales, invoices and receiving payments, creating reports, graphs and analyzing financial data in a computer lab setting.

This is for Windows based computers - not MAC.

Barry Lisak offers a free seminar at the Glen Cove Public Library to help reduce one’s Federal and New York State income taxes.  New Obamacare laws will be discussed as well as new Federal and NYS laws enacted this year.  Topics covered include education, homeownership, charitable contributions, medical investments, employee and miscellaneous deductions.  New tax laws will be highlighted and a free booklet, Last Minute Tax Strategies, will be distributed to all attendees.  Registration is not required; seating is on a first-come-first-served basis.  Barry Lisak is an IRS enrolled agent and has been a tax professional for the last 30 years.  He is currently the weekly tax columnist for New York’s civil service newspaper, The Chief.

The Invention of Wings, tells the story of four women - two sisters from the prosperous white Grimké family and an African-American mother and daughter who are their house slaves - living in antebellum Charleston, South Carolina.  As their intertwined stories unfold in their own voices, we learn that the four have a lot in common, especially the desire to break free.  Inspired by actual historical figures and events, Sue Monk Kidd’s extraordinary novel tells the story of two struggles for freedom and speaks about the nature of evil and injustice, the courage to do what seems impossible and the perseverance of hope.  Join us as librarian Amy Mondello leads a discussion of this poignant novel.  Copies of the book will be available at the Reference desk.

Chinese Culture Celebration at the Glen Cove Library

Join us at the Glen Cove Public Library as George Wei offers an informative and entertaining presentation on traditional Chinese culture. Mr. Wei will discuss China and its ancient cultures and dynasties.  Learn how many of China’s spiritual traditions are based on values, honor, etiquette, sincerity and compassion.  You will learn about the Chinese calendar (Chinese New Year is February 8th), Chinese medicine (herbs and acupuncture) and be treated to a martial arts demonstration.
