St. Patrick's Day Parade 2013

It's a great day for the Irish (and everyone's Irish on St Patrick's Day!) as the Glen Cove St. Patrick's Day Parade marches through downtown, with Daniel J. Lane as this year's Grand Marshal. Sunday, March 17, starting at 1 PM. The parade starts at the RM Finley Middle School and proceeds down Forest Ave., Brewster St. to School St, and then down Glen St. to St. Patrick's Church at Pearsall Ave. Plentiful FREE parking is available at the Brewster Street Parking Garage and Pulaski Street Parking Garage.

The parade is organized by the Ancient Order of Hibernians Mike Moran Division 8.

Glen Cove Rated One of Nation's Safest Cities

Website ranks city twelfth safest in U.S.

Your chances of being the victim of a crime in Glen Cove are less than in most other cities in the country, according to a recent report.

The website NeighborhoodScout released its list of the Top 100 Safest Cities in the U.S. for cities with populations of more than 25,000 people. Glen Cove ranked 12, one spot higher than Greenwich, Conn. and one behind Sammamish, Wash.

The rankings are based on the total number of property and violent crimes per 1,000 residents. Crimes include burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft, murder, forcible rape, armed robbery and aggravated assault.

Chances of becoming a victim of violent crime in Glen Cove are one-in-1,504, whereas they are one-in-251 in New York State as a whole, the latter number being on par with the rest of the country.

The property crime rate comparison shows another wide gap, with a one-in-127 chance of becoming a victim in Glen Cove compared to a one-in-52 chance statewide.

Glen Cove experiences a median of 12 crimes per square mile, compared to 47 per square mile for the state and a national median of 39.6, according to the ranking.

The city was rated as having a median of 18 violent crimes and 213 property crimes annually, according to data reported to the FBI.

Det. Lt. John Nagle of the Glen Cove Police Department said having a local police force helps in preventing crime. He said 36 of the department's 45 members are city residents.

"Our officers are out there in the community. We know who the bad guys are," he said

COMMUNITY TREE TO SUPPORT DOWNTOWN IMPROVEMENTS

We invite everyone in the Glen Cove community to join us in creating a community tree in Village Square. Holiday ornaments with your family or business name can be purchase from the Glen Cove Downtown B.I.D. The ornaments will be placed on the tree that stands in Village Square from November through January.

Choose from snowflake, holly leaf, stocking or ornament. They are $20.00 each. Proceeds will go to further beautifying and improvementing downtown Glen Cove.

The Downtown B.I.D. decorates the downtown with seasonal items like hanging flower baskets, banners, cornstalks, holiday lights and decorations, and plantings in public spaces that are neglected and overlooked, to name just a few of our projects.
