Get ready for a summer of live music

Downtown Sounds celebrates 25 years of bringing music to the streets of Glen Cove

Downtown Sounds has been a fixture on Friday evenings in downtown Glen Cove for the past 25 years, and to mark the significant milestone, the Downtown Sounds Committee has planned a superior schedule of performers for this summer’s nine-week concert series in Glen Cove.

Produced by the Glen Cove Business Improvement District (B.I.D.), Downtown Sounds started as Jazz in the Square in 1997 with local musicians playing before modest crowds at the intersection of Glen and School Streets. This contrasts the current version where headline acts appear and overflow crowds have forced closure of those busy city streets. Indeed, people come from miles around to enjoy the music and stroll the city sidewalks. In addition to music aficionados, downtown businesses prosper and have come to depend on the additional customers these free concerts bring.

Choosing the nine acts that perform during DTS is a challenge that the committee takes very seriously. “Over the past five years, we have made sure that our lineups were very diverse much like the Glen Cove community,” Executive Director of the B.I.D. Patricia Holman explained. “We have also made an effort through our marketing and artist selection to reach a younger crowd. Judging by our audience in 2021, we have achieved these objectives!”

Tribute bands are always a big part of the DTS presentation and this year is no exception. Kicking off the season on July 1 with a Motown tribute is A Decade of Soul, with special guest Prentiss McNeil of the Drifters.  The ‘60s will be represented when Strawberry Fields brings its Beatlemania extravaganza to Glen Cove on July 29, while Milagro will pay homage to the music of Santana, on August 5. Moving into the ‘70s, Dancing Dream will perform all the greatest hits of ABBA, the legendary super-group from Sweden, on July 22. Known as the world’s most authentic ABBA tribute band, Dancing Dream will have audience members dancing in the streets. And returning to the lineup after a five-year hiatus, Soul Sound Revue, will bring the party with high-energy R&B to close out the season on Aug. 26. The nine-piece dance band was a staple of the concert series for years, and the committee is looking forward to having them back for the anniversary season.

While DTS crowds will no doubt welcome these popular acts, it’s a sure bet that debuting acts will also be well received. On July 8, country music will be featured when The Rustlers bring their high-energy performances of classic and contemporary country that is sure to please all audiences. Paradigm will perform the top hits of today on July 15. Unforgettable Fire will present the greatest hits of the legendary U2 on August 12. And finally, on August 19, Jesse Kinch, a singer, songwriter and guitarist who was the winner of the TV series Rising Star is scheduled to perform.

In 2021, Richie Cannata and the Lords of 52nd Street drew more than a thousand people.

Given its rich 25-year history, it’s safe to say that a whole generation has grown up with DTS concerts as a fixture on summer Friday nights and people have come to rely on them for weekly entertainment. Indeed, DTS has grown into an undertaking that its originators would have never dreamed possible. But it’s important to note that throughout its existence, one thing has remained constant. The incredible growth of this concert series would not have been possible without the sponsors who provide support and the dependable volunteers who make it happen each year. And that will likely continue both this year and beyond.
