History of Downtown Sounds

As a way to bring people into the downtown, the Glen Cove Downtown B.I.D. in 1997 created its first free concert series Jazz in The Square. It was a hit. During the following years, the concert series evolved to accommodate a variety of musical styles that broadened its appeal to residents and visitors alike. Today, the event – now known as Downtown Sounds – is jointly produced through a partnership between BID and the City of Glen Cove.

The City of Glen Cove has a long history of fine musical events, which began in 1959 with the Morgan Park Summer Music Festival. In 1997, the Downtown B.I.D. began a small outdoor concert series downtown knownas "Jazz In The Square." Today that festival has evolved into Downtown Sounds, making this concert series bigger and better than ever. Going forward the partnership between the Downtown BID and the City of Glen Cove will be focused on fulfilling the vision of making Glen Cove the “Music Capital of the North Shore.”

Every Friday night during July and August, the downtown Village Square Plaza comes alive with music featuring New York area artists. With the sounds of jazz, rhythm and blues, rock, folk, salsa and other genres filling the air, the public enjoys great music while dancing and dining in our open and inviting downtown area. Many downtown businesses find they receive benefits beyond increased foot traffic and public awareness by becoming a sponsor of Downtown Sounds. Why not make your organization a part of this yearly fun!
